Alstonville is is a modern township on the rich volcanic soils, inland from Ballina. A feature of its landscape is the extensive coverage of Tibouchina, which produces a purple covering when in season. Originally a rich sub-tropical area known as the Big Brush, only small pockets of the forest now remain. One such location is the Victoria Park Nature Reserve where a variety of the original plant life such as white booyong, bumpy ash and red been can still be found. The area is renownded for its tropical fruits with a special tropical fruit research station located on the eastern edge of the town. |
