BARRABA LOCAL HISTORY

This page is designed to provide space for people of the Community to provide local history information about their community and to provide links to relevant history sites related to this community. The management of this site realises that this list may not be complete.

The Victoria Hotel was built as a hotel, but initially the CBC Bank opened it as a bank. In 1894, 18th April, was held up and the Manager, Mr McKay was shot dead. The bushrangers were subsequently caught, Alex Lee and John Cummins were hung after being convicted of the crime. These two bushrangers were the first to be hung in Tamworth. After shooting the manager, the bushrangers heard his wife in the dining room and shot twice through the door at her, but missed her. The bullet holes are still in the door today!

The following newspaper clipping was shared with us by Doreen Jennar along with this information. We gratefully acknowledge her contribution.
I have a newspaper clipping of the original school which was bought from Reuben Harris in 1950.
Eric Jennar lowered the windows and turned it into a family home. In late ‘60s the home was sold on to Mr Baines who done extensions etc. It is now owned by the Chester family.
Thought you might like to add the picture to the very interesting and enlightening profile of Barraba.
