![]() In the late 1830's Bellingen was literally a backwater known as Boat Harbour from where the precious red cedar was shipped down to the mouth of the Bellinger River in low draft sailing vessels. With the felling of the forests by the timber getters, the farmers followed, laying the foundations of a strong agricultural industry. Today Bellingen is a pretty village, nested in the Bellinger Valley and on the banks of the Bellinger River. It is an area of alternative life styles, farming and artisans. It has a diverse and relaxed character which suits the quaintness and beauty of the village with its many heritage buildings.
