Byron Bay is located on the most easterly part of the Australian mainland with the Byron Bay Lighthouse situated on Cape Byron, the most easterly point. The Cape was named by Captain Cook in 1770 with the adjacent bay becoming known as Byron Bay when settlement commenced there around 1870.

Byron Bay is an important centre for alternate living and its world famous surfing beaches.
