GOODOOGA LOCAL HISTORY

This page is designed to provide space for people of the Community to provide local history information about their community and to provide links to relevant history sites related to this community. The management of this site realises that this list may not be complete.

Goodooga is rich in local history and the district is believed to have been one of the former hideouts of the legendary bushranger, Captain Thunderbolt.

Goodooga was also a settlement area for Chinese people in the early 40's and 50's and down by the Goodooga Weir are remains of old Chinese Vegetable Gardens.

I'm not aware of what brought the Chinese people to Goodooga but i think that they were either searching for gold and labouring.

It's is also believed that that large amounts of opal and gold are situated under and around Goodooga. Information about the opal and gold maybe found in information booklets in Lightning Ridge which is located on the Castlereigh highway about 40 minutes from Goodooga.

The Tin Camp - Goodooga

Hi Goodooga
My family owned Cuttabunda station (30km south of Goodooga) from about 1870 until 1896 when they went bust and had to sell the property. I have just been told that my Great Grandfather John Spencer ran a grocery store in Goodooga I guess from 1896 until possibly 1910 or 1911.
I will be in the Brewarrina / Goodooga area from 20th April to 24th April and wondered if anyone in Goodooga would have any records or old photographs from that time.
Best Regards
Ian Spencer
